A book where nanobots take over humans and the main(?) character injects nanobots into other people through the spinal cord

2022.01.25 07:06 V_PixelMan_V A book where nanobots take over humans and the main(?) character injects nanobots into other people through the spinal cord

I've read it a few years ago and I only remember the main character (at least I think he was the main character) had nanobots manipulating him and he first practiced the spinal injections on homeless people and then did that to his friends or co-workers or someone like that. Then they tried to take something over but that's very hazy in my mind.
Any help is appreciated!

Hello everybody!
This is a story of a D&D campaign gone completely array because of: lack of communication, emotions, and a DM who couldn't seem to understand that logic and D&D could go together.
5e, names changed, all that goof stuff.
This begins In a homebrew setting made by our current DM. a simple but well developed technological world full of darkness and light.
In the beginning we had: 3 rogues, a fighter, and a twin brother and sister tabaxi which were respectively a cleric, and a sorcerer. Later, one of the rogues began an artificer. But that will be relevant later.
It begins in an overgrown one shot battling the shadows in a cave, looking for something called the "all cure' we all had some kind of desease, illness, or curse. So we all had our individual Reasons for being there. All except the fighter (and 2 rogues who joined later in the campaign) sacrificed something to get to the all cure. The artificer a hand. Sorcerer a leg (would've been her whole body if we didnt stop her) and the cleric his tail. Finally finding the all cure! And returning back to the town we hailed from.
It was a fun one shot which later growed in to a homebrew campaign. We were all excited, and 2 friends even joined us. Giving us a total party of 6. After many drinks, roleplay and NPC's The town went mad. The robots that were defending and regulating the city went haywire. And we were to sort it out. By resetting the arcane core that controlled these robots. We should be able to eradicate the problem.
So into the dungeon we went! A fun battle erupted and spirits were up after winning a seemingly impossible battle at first (4 displacer beast for a lvl 5 party) But we did it!
Eventually getting to the core and trying to reset it. We come across a general of some group called: the king of crows. Which, in mine (the cleric) and the sorceres back story were important figures because they cursed the sorcerer. A battle once again erupted. And things seemed impossible to win.
In heinsight, a party of 6 level 5 characters against 17 soldiers (both ranged and magic users) And their OP general wasn't a battle we were able to win.
At this point I saw no way of winning this battle, and fleeing it wasn't an option since the door closed on us. So here we stood.
After this thought process I looked at the rest of the players and told them that this is not a battle we can win. But I had a plan.
I still had the all cure. Which, I doubted the capability of it actually curing anything. So in a last ditch effort I threw it at their general. Which erupted in a bright light, killing all the people except the players.. Well.. One died, but thats another story. After some great RP and a trippy dream, this player was alive once again. And we decided to go to his hometown.
After traveling a lot, a trippy conversation with a hag and her giant snail. We got to the town, which was called "town' We had drinks, fun and laughs, and a problem. His sister went missing from time to time, and the cleric got an assignment from what he believed was his god. To eradicate the evil which lived in the town. (Cleric was a light cleric, and a follower of helm)
Going on an investigation, one of the townspeople sons had died. And we sought out to take some earned revenge. So out we go, in search of the evil that plagued the city, only to see the sister of our party member to turn out to be the evil.
Sadly, u had the assignment to kill her, and so I did. But that was a mistake, as the assignment didn't come from my god. But from a fey being called "the deceiver' so the relationship between his and his god was shattered. Sadly, there was no IRL communication on this on for hand. And I was quite literally just scrapped of my cleric class. Including most of my spells and ability's. I had some innate magic which could work, but only if I rolled high enough.
This was strike 2 for me. First the unwinnable combat. And second the stripping of my class. I am autistic. And used to take the metaphorical punches when problems arrive. So I didnt recognize the feeling which later turned out to be disappointment, and unsafety. His sister was luckily still alive and we returned to town.
Eventually we went on a boat trip to the main city, to try and revive the townspeople son. Looking for some kind of cleric, and paying for his revival. This was also a mistake..
You see, in every story there are protagonists and antagonists. And we were between them. One faction was the king of crows. And the other was called the lions of mercy (basically also followers of the light, but in a brute way) so more drinks entailed, and a little travel montage was added. When we arrived we were instantly searched by the new leaders of the capital: the lions of mercy.
Since my sister (sorcerer) was cursed, and a few of our party members still had a disease or curse on them. We knew that this was nothing good. And that we should try to run. We didnt, sadly the party argued that if I, a champion of light. Talked with them, that everything would be fine... Sadly, they were mistaken. We were thrown into a jail cell and interrogated. Which luckily didnt entail in any deaths. We escaped eventually with some help. And in a very funny scene (hand cuffed behind the backs and knocking guards out with literal bull rushes) we escaped the holding cell.
We managed to get into the sewers, and managed by the stroke of luck of another cellmate. To lead the guards to another path. We decided to take a rest, since most of us were exhausted and low HP. Income: the were rates. Or something like that. 4 of them attacking us in a room inside the sewer. We put up a good fight. But I was low HP. And because they had pact tactics. I decided to flee towards the opposite side of the room. My sister summons a hell hound (panther for flavor) to defend me. Eventually the last rat decides to jump over to me (while being attack by the other party members) and literally tries to kill me, while receiving 40+ damage from my other party members.
I got the feeling the DM was really out to get me. And my character died.
After that I went to think on it, and finally understood the feelings I had been feeling. So I quit the campaign as of yesterday. I hear they're on an hiatus right now. And I am curious wat is learned. No hate towards the DM or the rest of the players. But this situation could've been handled a lot better. Communication, balance in combat, and at least trying to let the characters rest after an escape were the things to be done.
P.s.my sister (sorcerer) also left because she wouldn't want to continue without her brother.
TLDR. An unsafe place is created, and combat is made WAY to hard for a party. So 2 players leave the party.
Thank you for reading. I needed this off my chest

2022.01.25 07:06 AdRepresentative7600 Genzyme Company’s Focus on Orphan Drugs

Does Genzyme’s focus on orphan drugs make sense? Do you think Genzyme has a long-term strategic intent? The fact that Genzyme focused on orphan drugs can be doubtful, but I believe that such an approach was rather lucrative for the organization. Of course, it cannot be denied that it was rather risky to consider only orphan drugs because some other company might have the same focus, which would lead to conflict and great competition. Except for that, the drugs could be imitated oand brought to the US from abroad. Finally, such a product may require a new different technology that is not present in Genzyme. Still, such an approach meant that the organization could focus on narrowly targeted needs instead of grasping numerous capabilities. It can save spending using small-scale production equipment. The number of personnel can also be limited, and advertising costs reduced. Moreover, these drugs do not need much investment in clinical testing facilities. I believe this focus was a long-term strategic direction, which showed that the company is struggling to offer a treatment that can help people who have some rare healthcare problems. This market is not as competitive as others; that is why Genzyme is likely to receive great profit. It has good chances to become a leader in the market that is neglected by other organizations due to the low competition. A long-term strategic direction can also be proved by the division of the businesses in different areas of medicine, as Genzyme can reach more customers in this way, adapting to their needs. Except for that, it ensures the acquisition of blockbusters and receives previously unapproachable opportunities due to the patents under the Orphan Drugs Act (Schilling 2010). Thus, it seems to be more logical to consider that the company has long-term intent. Why do you think Genzyme has diversified into other areas of medicine? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? To my mind, the decision made by the organization to diversify into different areas of medicine was made in order to become a leader in the biotech market and improve its performance, receiving a reliable source of finances. Genzyme pays much attention to its research and development department, which allows creating a new medicine for rare illnesses, so it got an opportunity to support it with additional funds. Such diversification was also beneficial as it enabled to omit technology licensing. Now the organization can produce and sell the treatment without external help utilizing their own discoveries and innovations. Of course, it may be riskier than licensing because no one can be 100% sure of the outcomes and say that in the future is drugs will be in demand. However, the amount of investment is likely to be appropriate. In the case of the drug being successfully sold, Genzyme will have increased income that will remain within the company as it is doing its own production and sales. Unfortunately, it may be difficult for the organization to find a pharma partner due to its new focus. Research and development costs will be increased but nor spent on open innovation. Finally, the core organizational strategy may pale into insignificance because the focus on orphan drugs requires enormous efforts and lots of alterations. Still, Genzyme received an opportunity to develop its own unique medicines meant to treat many different diseases and illnesses. The company found new ways to capture more market share and became independent from other organizations that previously affected its operations, which improved its competitive advantage (Schilling 2010). It received a strong, focused strategic direction that ensures future profitability and sustainability and allows to dominate the market in future.
